There is a major flaw in all of this ‘lost learning’ rhetoric. It is not a permanent loss. Death is! The loss everyone is moaning about is relative to standard expectations based on normal times. In case you haven’t noticed, these are not normal times, so normal standards do not apply. When kids eventually go back to school, they will quickly get back in the game.

As it is, the standards include some interesting but non-essential knowledge. When was the last time you needed to calculate the limits of a parabola or balance a chemical equation? The Battle off Hastings…

In the 2020 presidential election 74,223,030 citizens voted to re-elect Donald Trump. Have you no shame?

Do you recognize these words? “trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent”? They are from the Boy Scout Motto. How about honor, shame, truthfulness, empathy, compassion, respect, admiration, pride, honest, faithful, and considerate? When I was growing up in the fifties and sixties, these were the values we were taught for ourselves and our country. In 1980, Ronald Reagan referred to the US as “America is a shining city upon a hill whose beacon light guides freedom-loving people…

Essential workers deserve a living wage.

Look at the list above and you should realize that most of these people are considered ‘essential workers’ during these COVID–19 times. Without their services, none of us could stay at home and avoid the virus. There is no denying that they are essential, so we need to pay them accordingly with a ‘Living Wage’. In doing so, we would also be addressing America’s Poverty Challenge — We Have Fought and Won Bigger Battles!

Is this the America we want it to be? There are two-parent families in America with each parent working two jobs and barely making ends meet…

I am grateful for having a diverse group of friends and followers who cause me to think critically about important issues. Sometimes their postings amaze me. They allow me to respond with a dose of what I consider reality. Full disclosure — I am an atheist who grew up in a Christian family and at one point served as the President of the Ecumenical Encounter for Youth for the Northeastern United States. Participants represented many different religions. Currently, I serve on three Prince William County Homelessness committees. Faith-based organizations provide a wide range of critical homeless services. I am not…

The Generals got the medals, the troops got the injuries — and nothing was won.

What is the best way to show respect for our armed forces personnel?

Stop wasting their lives!

Nobody wins a war — except those who sit home and profit from it. We need to spend our defense and security dollars (not to mention our personnel) more wisely and effectively. Then we need to take the savings and invest them in infrastructure and public service programs that will reduce poverty and provide real security to millions of Americans.

Back in 1936, poet Carl Sandberg wrote an epic poem titled, “The People, Yes.”[2]

The healthcare debate in the US is caught up in the gridlock of positional bargaining. Both sides have a list of outcomes that form their position, and their discussions consist largely of each side agreeing to concede or give up some portion of their position in exchange for a perceived similarly valued concession from the other side — resulting in a compromise solution that both sides can live with but neither side is happy with. In the early 1980s, Roger Fisher of the Harvard Negotiation Project published a book called Getting To Yes that recommends a cultural change from positional…

Human Trafficking

It has two distinct but overlapping elements, sex trafficking and forced labor or slavery.

Sex Trafficking

At a recent meeting discussing homelessness, I heard a presentation on human trafficking. The handout below surprised and shocked me. I was woefully unaware that this problem existed to this extent here in Northern VA.

Sex Trafficking is not an isolated condition. It is becoming a major source of revenue for gang operations like MS-13. In some cases, it is rivaling illegal drug sales as their major source of income. When they sell a drug, it’s done. They have to get more drugs to sell more…

A friends recent FaceBook post made me question my knowledge about the issues mentioned. They appeared to be misinformed Republican talking points. I am a lifelong learner and educator, so I was concerned that some things I thought were true might not be. My friend challenged me to, Check it out”, so I did. Here is what I found. My comments are in italics.

I just have a few questions for you….Let me start with, I already know you don’t like President Trump…that’s a given, SO

let’s move on from that…

How about the division of America….

Do you not…

We are a long way from beating this threat, but Trump wants us to declare victory and move on. Why?

As you have no doubt noticed, we are fighting two major wars right now. One is against an aggressively contagious deadly virus, and the other is an internal war between factions of our population over how to behave during the COVID 19 war. Historically, Americans come together to fight a common enemy. Not so much today.

· Going all the way back to the revolutionary war, people from territories (not yet states) all over the country united to throw off the bonds with England. …

I grew up and lived in New England for many years. Whenever there would be some major weather event, we would hear an announcement telling all non-essential workers to stay home. At some subconscious level I wondered who these non-essential workers were and how did they know that they were non-essential. Presumably, it was not a personal issue. It was not the individual that was non-essential, it was the position. With the pandemic, we are hearing the term more frequently, so again I wondered, “Who are these non-essential people?” According to the 2013 Essential Service Act, the definition of an…
